The Iowa Prize for Literary Nonfiction
The Iowa Prize for Literary Nonfiction, open to both new and established writers, is awarded for a book-length manuscript of literary nonfiction originally written in English. Collections that include previously published periodical articles are eligible as long as the author has retained copyright. Work that has been previously self-published in its entirety is not eligible. Current University of Iowa students or University of Iowa Press employees past or present are not eligible.
Manuscripts should be at least 40,000 words long but not to exceed 90,000 words. Manuscripts should be doubled-spaced. Put your name on the title page only.
Please submit only via Submittable. Hard copies of manuscripts sent to the Press will not be accepted. Submissions must be sent via Submittable on or between July 1 and August 15. No exceptions.
A $10 administrative fee is payable to the University of Iowa Press. We consider simultaneous submissions but ask that you notify the Press immediately should your manuscript be accepted elsewhere. Only the winners will be notified. The results will be posted through University of Iowa Press social media accounts and website.
The winning manuscript will be published by the University of Iowa Press under its standard royalty agreement and contract terms.
