Carl Van Vechten was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1880. He graduated from the University of Chicago in 1903, and after 1906 he worked in New York and Paris as a journalist and novelist. Between 1932 and his death in 1964 he devoted himself to portrait photography, and his photographs of literary and artistic personages are well known.
